“Thank you for making working with you on the exhibition for Breaking the Chains such a pleasurable experience. You were always positive, constructive and imaginative. The interactives look great and they are standing the test of time and are exactly what we wanted".

Anne Lineen, Exhibition Manager, British Empire and Commonwealth Museum

We created many illustrations for the interactives, all designed to appeal to younger visitors.

Breaking the Chains Exhibition

The British Empire and
Commonwealth Museum

A £1 million Heritage Lottery Funded exhibition created to mark the 200-year anniversary of the 1807 Act that abolished the British Transatlantic Slave Trade.

This ground-breaking exhibition presents authentic artefacts, film, music, images, video and personal testimonies to provide visitors with an incredible multi-sensory experience.

Smith and Jones were responsible for the design and manufacture of hands on activities, graphics and interactive displays for younger people visiting this ground-breaking exhibition.

The activities all featured commissioned illustrations designed to appeal to the younger visitor.
